I was a former ACS(Independent) IB student and will be going to London School of Economics this year to complete my undergraduate degree. I met Andy at a tuition center back in 2011 when I needed help with Mathematics as a secondary 2 student. Andy was very knowledgeable in his field and was able to articulate key concepts clearly for me to grasp quickly as a young student. Even when certain topics got challenging, he was patient with me and ensured that I understood the methods for solving tough questions. He was instrumental in helping me excel in Mathematics that I was willing to reach out to him for help after he left the tuition center. I am confident that Andy will continue to inspire students to excel in Mathematics, and at the same time, enjoy the subject. I can say that Andy’s tuition really helped me to turn around not just my math grades but my interest in the subject in general. At the end of secondary 1 my Mathematics grades were awful, actually getting 0 for tests and placing at the bottom of my class for mid years. Coming to the end of year exams, I had actually given up on the subject all together, refusing to even touch it. Andy came in to help me, and in about 3 hours, he identified what my misunderstandings were, and taught me the basics and fundamentals of the subject in a way that really stuck with me. With that foundation and understanding that he taught, I went on to do well for my end of years. Ever since I’ve started Secondary 1, I have been faring “F9” for e-math all the way till Secondary 4.
Things took a turn after I decided on a stint of intense tuition with Andy for a period of six months, just before my paper for O’s. For O’s, I had a marked improvement for E-Maths. Andy taught me E and A maths at upper secondary level. He was one of the most patient and attentive teachers I have ever had, quickly identifying my weak areas and giving me targeted exercises to strengthen them. Unlike many tuition teachers, Andy demonstrates that quality of teaching is far more important than quantity of exercises and test papers that one can do. Through targeted practice, I was able to gain confidence for exam conditions and eventually attained an A1 in E maths and an A2 in A maths at the GCE O levels, the latter of which I was nearly failing before Andy tutored me. - Kiran J.
